Living will

It depends on your jurisdiction. ?

You'll want to assign your LO to a guardian via Will, and you'll want to assign your financial wishes to be executed via Trust. ?

Pick up a personal finance book. ?Really, educate yourself on these matters. ?You're already taking a step in the right direction by admitting that you know you need something -- take the next step and find out what you need. ?$1,000 to $1,500 is typical in my area, so $2,000 doesn't seem that far off.?

It's important to know your state's laws surrounding Wills and Trusts. ?Especially where finances are concerned, Trusts will cost your beneficiaries less when transferring your assets to their ownership. ?It's also more difficult to contest a Trust. ?

Old-Fashioned Motherhood: From the Comments: Frustration in ...

Dear friends,

This morning, I checked my e-mail inbox to find that I had a new comment on an older post of mine called "The Incredible Shrinking Family". I could feel the pain of the writer so clearly in her words, and I wanted to reach out to her. Who of us have not been frustrated, tired, and just plain worn-out?

Here's what she wrote:

Hi! I came across your blog today and loved reading this post. I agree with everything you have to say ... in principle. But in practice I find this very difficult. I want to love children and love being a mother, but I just don't!
I have two darling little girls who I love, but I don't love being a mother. Pregnancy was miserable, the sleep deprivation of newborns was horrendous and the tantrums and potty training of toddlers has been torture! Like you say, it takes sacrifice, but I sometimes feel like it is just too much for me. I long for a life outside of my children, for some part of me to be left-over at the end of the day for my husband, for something besides diapers and disciplining and dishes!
So yes, children are important and families are vital and I believe in the LDS doctrine of the family ... but I just can't have more children. I feel it would be disastrous for me, for my marriage and for the children we already have. So I guess what I'm saying is that I totally get why some women do not want to have children or do not want to have a lot of children. I understand what they are feeling!
I would have never guessed that I would be saying this. As a young LDS teen, I yearned for a large family. But now, when reality has set in, I am just not enjoying it at all! I feel like overall I have a good attitude around my children and love them, do all of the good stay-at-home-mom things, but deep-down, I am miserable. Any advice?

I know that often people may think that my posts are so idealistic that I must never have bad days or frustrations, or a bad attitude. I'm sorry if this is a disappoinment, ladies, but I have had those days when I want to throw in the towel. I have moments where I hold my head in my hands and think "What have I done?!"

:-)

But those days don't last forever (Thank goodness!) and with the Lord's help we can do the difficult and succeed-- and have joy! (I promise!!!)

Here was my response to her, and to all moms who have those times and seasons where they feel they can't take another step, change another diaper, or wash one more dish:

I am so sorry that you are so overwhelmed and discouraged. Boy, have I been there! But there really is hope and peace on the horizon...

First of all, you are deep in the trenches of one of the hardest times of motherhood! I advise you take a deep breath and try to see into your future five, ten or fifteen years from now.

You will NOT always be sleep deprived and mired in the difficulties of trying to be and do everything on your own. Those little ones you have now WILL grow, they will learn to do more for themselves, and they will not always be so demanding.

The time you take now to patiently, lovingly train them will buy you more liberty and breathing room in your not-too-distant future. Is it hard? YES. But from experience, I can tell you, that when you work hard at training those first few little ones, then they become more helpful to you in your duties AND with any other little ones that may be in your future.

Toddler-hood really is the time that ALL moms want to throw in the towle and say "I'm not cut out for this!" You are FAR from being alone in those feelings, I promise!

It is okay to take a break and let your body and your heart heal for a time. But the secret to that and to surviving and moving forward in everything is to PRAY. HARD. Ask for a blessing from your husband, now and then. Pray for peace. For direction. For patience.?

Good grief, I even once had to start praying that I could LOVE my kids!!! LOL! The beauty and blessing was that MY PRAYERS WORKED.

Anything worth doing is difficult-- that's the test of this life. But you don't need to hold your breath as you try to make it through the difficult years. Come up to the surface and breathe deeply in the Father's love, mercy and help.

None of us can succeed at this alone. We need Christ, and He is willing and waiting to take those troubles and burdens from us if we will just give them to Him.

Please don't struggle alone when you don't have to! The Lord loves you and sees every sacrifice and tear and sleepless night.?

Don't worry about having another baby right now. Just work on your relationship with Christ. Then everything else will fall into place.

We can "do all things through Christ." But we should not run faster than we have strength. We NEED to take time to be healed by the Lord. He will give us all we need and then some, helping us to do all things "in wisdom and order."

I know the writer and I would love to hear any other advice from my readers. Do you have more to add?

With love to all my sisters in the motherhood trenches,

Algeria finds dead Canadian militants as siege toll rises

ALGIERS (Reuters) - Algerian forces have found the bodies of two Canadian Islamist fighters after a bloody siege at a desert gas plant, a security source said on Monday, as the death toll reached at least 80 after troops stormed the complex to end the hostage crisis.

Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal is expected to give details on Monday about the siege near the town of In Amenas, which left American, British, French, Japanese, Norwegian, Filipino and Romanian workers dead or missing.

Much remains unclear about events after the jihadists staged the attack last Wednesday. However, an Algerian newspaper said they had arrived in cars painted in the colors of state energy company Sonatrach but registered in neighboring Libya, a country awash with arms since Muammar Gaddafi's fall in 2011.

The Algerian security source told Reuters that documents found on the bodies of the two militants had identified them as Canadians, as special forces scoured the plant following Saturday's bloody end to the crisis.

Veteran Islamist fighter Mokhtar Belmokhtar claimed responsibility for the attack on behalf of al Qaeda, and an official Algerian source has said the militants included people from outside the African continent, as well as Arabs and Africans.

A security source said on Sunday that Algerian troops had found the bodies of 25 hostages, raising the number of hostages killed to 48 and the total number of deaths to at least 80. He said six militants were captured alive and troops were still searching for others.

A Japanese government source said the Algerian government had informed Tokyo that nine Japanese had been killed, the biggest toll so far among foreigners at the plant. Six Filipinos died and four were wounded, a government spokesman in Manila said.

The raid has exposed the vulnerability of multinational-run oil and gas installations in an important producing region and pushed the growing threat from Islamist militant groups in the Sahara to a prominent position in the West's security agenda.

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has ordered an investigation into how security forces failed to prevent the attack, the daily El Khabar said. The militants had used nine cars in Sonatrach colors and all with Libyan registration plates, it quoted unnamed security sources as saying.

Algerian Tahar Ben Cheneb - leader of a group called the Movement of Islamic Youth in the South who was killed on the first day of the assault - had been based in Libya where he married a local woman two months ago, it said.

ONE-EYED JIHADIST

Belmokhtar - a one-eyed jihadist who fought in Afghanistan and Algeria's civil war of the 1990s when the secular government fought Islamists - tied the desert attack to France's intervention across the Sahara against Islamist rebels in Mali.

"We in al Qaeda announce this blessed operation," he said in a video, according to Sahara Media, a regional website. About 40 attackers participated in the raid, he said, roughly matching the government's figures for fighters killed and captured.

Belmokhtar demanded an end to French air strikes against Islamist fighters in neighboring Mali. These began five days before the fighters swooped before dawn and seized a plant that produces 10 percent of Algeria's natural gas exports.

U.S. and European officials doubt such a complex raid could have been organized quickly enough to have been conceived as a direct response to the French military intervention. However, the French action could have triggered an operation that had already been planned.

The group behind the raid, the Mulathameen Brigade, also threatened to carry out more such attacks if Western powers did not end what it called an assault on Muslims in Mali, according to the SITE service, which monitors militant statements.

In a statement published by the Mauritania-based Nouakchott News Agency, the hostage takers said they had offered talks about freeing the captives, but the Algerian authorities had been determined to use military force.

"We opened the door for negotiations with the Westerners and the Algerians, and granted them safety from the beginning of the operation, but one of the senior (Algerian) intelligence officials confirmed to us in a phone call that they will destroy the place with everyone in it," SITE quoted the statement as saying.

BLOODY SIEGE

The siege turned bloody on Thursday when the Algerian army opened fire, saying fighters were trying to escape with their prisoners. Survivors said Algerian forces blasted several trucks in a convoy carrying both hostages and their captors.

Nearly 700 Algerian workers and more than 100 foreigners escaped, mainly on Thursday when the fighters were driven from the residential barracks. Some captors remained holed up in the industrial complex until Saturday when they were overrun.

The bloodshed has strained Algeria's relations with its Western allies, some of which have complained about being left in the dark while the decision to storm the compound was being taken.

Nevertheless, Britain and France both defended the military action by Algeria, the strongest military power in the Sahara and an ally the West needs in combating the militants.

Among other foreigners confirmed dead by their home countries were three Britons, one American and two Romanians. The missing include five Norwegians, three Britons and a British resident. An Algerian security source said at least one Frenchman was also among the dead.

The raid on the plant, which was home to expatriate workers from Britain's BP, Norway's Statoil, Japanese engineering firm BGC Corp and others, exposed the vulnerability of multinational oil operations in the Sahara.

However, Algeria is determined to press on with its energy industry. Oil Minister Youcef Yousfi visited the site and said physical damage was minor, state news service APSE reported. The plant would start up again in two days, he said.

Algeria, scarred by the civil war with Islamist insurgents in the 1990s which claimed 200,000 lives, insisted from the start of the crisis there would be no negotiation in the face of terrorism. France especially needs close cooperation from Algeria to crush Islamist rebels in northern Mali.

94% The Sessions

All Critics (175) | Top Critics (41) | Fresh (166) | Rotten (10) | DVD (1)

Thanks to Lewin's light but assured touch, The Sessions never wears its theological preoccupations heavily, instead allowing transcendence to creep up on the audience quietly.

A very different kind of love story, breaking taboos lightly, with sensitivity and humor.

Achieves its sunny disposition by pulling punches.

A funny, tender and mostly unsentimentalized movie about physical and emotional triumph.

Forced to do all his acting with his face, Hawkes displays the kind of camera-arresting capability that has earned others Oscar nominations.

(... ) a remarkable film about disability, incapacity and the joy of freedom in the most impossible of situations.

This funny, moving, beautifully acted movie avoids numerous pitfalls.

Satisfaction guaranteed? Pretty much.

It's Hawkes's portrayal, in all its wit, intelligence and childlike naivety, that really captures the heart.

By taking a sensitive, honest approach to this true story, breakthrough filmmaker Lewin both avoids sentimentality and keeps the focus on the inner lives of the central characters.

It's a brave performance from Hunt, who spends much of the film entirely naked. Both her and Hawkes are brilliant in a movie that is a massively uplifting experience.

The movie becomes a touching, often funny portrayal of sex as a form of kindness and human contact.

Hunt is a prodigy. No other actress could have brought such easeful transparency, such a glow of givingness, such heedlessness of glamour each time she strips naked.

Not only does it deal with sex in a straightforward manner, but it also deals with the equally sensitive themes of disability and religion, all of which writer/director Ben Lewin pulls off skilfully.

The Sessions can be sugary, but it's likable.

You could maybe see it working as a play, though the tactile detail of these scenes needs close-ups on the actors' faces to communicate what the transaction means to them both.

It's tender, humane and funny and superbly acted; a simple but affecting parable about experiencing life to the fullest.

Three days after viewing, the film's questioning generosity and sense of perspective will still be knocking around your head.

The Sessions finally proves that Hollywood can take physical incapacity and/or sex far more seriously than it does the potential side effects of shooting so many people on screen so often.

A touching gem of a movie largely thanks to subtly dynamic performances from Helen Hunt and John Hawkes.

Hugely enjoyable, warm-hearted and frequently laugh-out-loud funny disability drama with a superb script and a pair of terrific performances from John Hawkes and Helen Hunt.

Lewin, who has fought his own lifelong polio battle, handles tricky material with a gentle, empathetic touch.

Formulaic but uplifting, positive and accessible.

In its barest form this is a traditional rites-of-passage yarn, dealing in first love and lost innocence, and even with a candid discussion of sex, it's mostly sweetness and light.

Few movies are so frank about the sexual mechanics of the disabled ...

S. Korea Sets Date for Next Rocket Launch Attempt

PARIS ? South Korea's KSLV-1, or Naro, rocket will make its third attempt to reach orbit in a launch scheduled between Jan. 30 and Feb. 8, Korea's Ministry of Education, Science and Technology said Jan. 16.

The vehicle, with a Russian-built first stage and a Korean second stage, failed in its first two launch attempts in 2009 and 2010, and the most recent launch attempt has been delayed since October because of two unrelated issues.

The failure of a hydraulic motor governing the second-stage engine's thrust vector control was the reason for the latest delay. The ministry said in a Jan. 16 statement that the suspect part has been replaced. The October launch had been canceled because of a leak in the first stage's helium pressurization unit.

Moscow-based Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center has provided the rocket's first stage and its RD-151 engine, which is a modified, less-powerful version of one of the engines Khrunichev plans to use for Russia's Angara rocket, now in development.

The ministry said the Korean government, through the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, has invested 529 billion Korean won ($479 million) into the Naro vehicle since development began, out of a total allocation of more than 1.5 trillion won dedicated to the vehicle through 2021.

A Korean government research satellite, the 100-kilogram STSAT-2C, is the intended passenger on the launch.

US Navy ship stuck on reef nearly a day after running ... - World News

The USS Guardian arrives at White Beach Naval Facility in Japan earlier this month.

By Ian Johnston, Staff Writer, NBC News

A U.S. Navy ship with a wood-and-fiberglass hull that ran aground on a reef off the Philippines was still stuck nearly 22 hours later, Navy officials said Thursday.

The USS Guardian, an Avenger-class minesweeper, hit the Tubbataha Reef in the Sula Sea at 2:25 a.m. local time Thursday (1:25 p.m. Wednesday ET), the Navy said in a statement.

The statement said no one was hurt as a result of the collision, about 80 miles east-southeast of Palawan Island.

?The crew is currently working to determine the best method of safely extracting the ship,? the statement said. ?The cause of the grounding is under investigation.?

Guardian, which is deployed to Sasebo, Japan, was commissioned Dec. 16, 1989, and has a crew of about 80, it added.

A U.S. Navy spokeswoman said at about 11:20 a.m. that the ship was still stuck on the reef.

According to a U.S. Navy factfile, the Guardian has a ?fiberglass sheathed, wooden hull.?

?These ships use sonar and video systems, cable cutters and a mine detonating device that can be released and detonated by remote control. They are also capable of conventional sweeping measures,? the factfile says.

Military Suicides in 2012 Hit Yet Another Record High

Surely, one of the more depressing ledes to run this week:

Suicides in the U.S. military surged to a record 349 last year, far exceeding American combat deaths in Afghanistan, and some private experts are predicting the dark trend will worsen this year.

The figures are tentative, pending the completion of full reports on each case later this year. The number of US military suicides surpassed the number of combat deaths for the third time in four years. (For 2012, the Associated Press recorded 295 American combat deaths in Afghanistan.) The previous record high was 310 suicides in 2009, after the rate began a disturbing upward trend starting in 2006.

A breakdown of the suicides among active-duty troops last year by service:

  • Army: 182
  • Marine Corps: 48
  • Air Force: 59
  • Navy: 60

According to the numbers released by the Pentagon, the suicide rate among active-duty military is still below that of the civilian population.

Here's the AP rundown of the Pentagon's analysis of military suicides in 2011:

Each year the Pentagon performs an in-depth study of the circumstances of each suicide. The most recent year for which that analysis is available is 2011, and among the findings was that those who took their own lives tended to be white men under the age of 25, in the junior enlisted ranks, with less than a college education.

The analysis of 2011's 301 military suicides also found that the suicide rate for divorced service members was 55 percent higher than for those who were married. It determined that 60 percent of military suicides were committed with the use of firearms - and in most cases the guns were personal weapons, not military-issued.

In 2009, the Army began developing required surveys for all new and current soldiers. The goal of the survey was to determine causes of the uptick in military suicides, and to learn how best to prevent suicides. The panel that developed the survey also launched the largest study of its kind: a $50 million, five-year study run by Army and the National Institutes of Mental Health. Professors from Harvard, the University of Michigan, and Columbia also sat on the panel of experts. A whole host of other studies?both private and backed by the government?are examining causes and prevention for military suicides. For instance, late last year, the Department of Defense announced a three-year, $10 million study, conducted at the Medical University of South Carolina, that tests whether fatty acids in fish oils can help cure the anxiety suffered by combat veterans, thus hopefully reducing the rising suicide rate.

The Department of Defense's toll-free military crisis number is 800-273-8255.

Sources say 10 to 15 USC football players involved in locker-room altercation after Sun Bowl loss

Moments after USC lost to Georgia Tech 21-7 in the Sun Bowl, about 10 to 15 Trojans players were involved in a locker room altercation, according to sources.

The incident started when some freshmen questioned the leadership of the team's seniors and whether they gave 100 percent effort for the Sun Bowl. This led to an argument that eventually escalated according to witnesses.

"It was one of the worst things I've seen in a locker room," said a player who did not wish to be identified.

Freshman offensive tackle Zach Banner did not wish to discuss the incident but said, "It's going to be a whole new family atmosphere next season and you can quote me on that. For the seniors, it's terrible."

Coach Lane Kiffin could not be reached for comment.

Sources said cornerback Nickell Robey informed teammates in the locker room he would turn pro although he waited almost two weeks to make the public announcement.

A year after Costa Concordia disaster, emotions resurface

Crews have been working 24 hours a day, building structures around the sunken Costa Concordia in an effort to remove it from off the coast of Italy's island of Giglio. A year later, those who were on board are still coming to terms with the accident that killed 32 people. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

By Michelle Kosinski, Correspondent, NBC News

GIGLIO ISLAND, Italy -- Just before the one-year anniversary of the Costa Concordia disaster, survivors find that their emotions are right back at the surface -- as they've been asked by the world's media over the past week to relive and retell their horror stories from that night, and to give an update on how they're doing.

The similarities in their stories have been striking: several survivors told NBC News that the night of Jan. 13, 2012 seems like a video game in their minds now, one in which they were the characters, with a laser focus on finding a lifeboat with enough room for them. Running along the decks, with a mission: to stay calm, and survive.

A couple from Boston said they drew upon the movie "Titanic" as they waited at the water line to be rescued, after rappelling down the side of the hull on a rope that they had found and tied around themselves. With images from the film replaying in their heads, they knew that if they tried to swim to safety, they might suffer hypothermia. And if they waited too long inside the ship, the suction from the water pouring in might also mean their end.

Even a year later, some accounts result in tears. The desperation and fear in those terrible memories have just been too intense to shake.?But more and more, survivors' stories end in satisfaction -- and in some cases, surprise -- at the strong lessons learned about their own personal mettle and endurance.

So, it was difficult for many to hear about a press release suddenly put out by one of the attorneys representing Concordia passengers, claiming that parent company Carnival Corporation was now blaming the passengers themselves, accusing them of negligence and alleging that their injuries were their own fault.

The release quoted from a response Carnival had filed back in November in response to a lawsuit by two uninjured passengers. The release stated that Carnival claimed that the passengers?"acted negligently or carelessly and were the sole or contributory cause of the alleged injuries or damages."

Carnival, however, told NBC News their words were taken out of context.

"The language in question, which is from a standard and customary legal filing in response to a complaint filed by two passengers, has been taken completely out of context. The defendants in the case have not accused the plaintiffs of negligence. It is truly shameful that anyone would purposely misrepresent what is stated in the filing, particularly as we near the one-year anniversary of the tragedy," a Carnival representative said.

It is doubtful that the emotion, the anger and the accusations surrounding this tragedy will dissipate anytime soon.

Hundreds of passengers have filed lawsuits against the cruise line; the Costa Concordia captain is accused of crimes including manslaughter and abandoning the ship; and two people who were on board that night are still missing.

Capt. Francesco Schettino has insisted that he was encouraged to do sail-pasts close to shore to delight tourists, a statement Costa Concordia has repeatedly deniedt. Schettino, meanwhile, has filed suit to get his job back.

How long will that sad, fading wreck rest in the port of the tiny Isola del Giglio? Probably until September -- at least. The huge removal project will cost $400 million.

A memorial service for the victims will mark the anniversary on Sunday. Crews will take the gigantic boulder that the Concordia struck and return it to sea.

The Costa Concordia, carrying more than 4,200 passengers, ran aground Jan. 13 off the coast of Italy killing 32 people - including two Americans.

Can This Man Save Pinball?

Can Jack Guarnieri and the Wizard of Oz save pinball? Can Jack Guarnieri and the?Wizard of Oz?save pinball?

Mariana Juliano for Slate.

The last guys who tried to save pinball bet all their quarters on a bunch of 3-D aliens. With sales of new machines dwindling in the late 1990s, the top execs at Williams, the company that controlled 80 percent of the worldwide market, called on their designers to reinvent the game. They emerged with an arcade centaur?the head of a video game on the body of a pinball machine?in which pixilated, holographic-looking Martians marauded among the mechanical gewgaws. ?Pinball 2000? was a technological marvel. It also nearly killed pinball forever.

In October 1999, not long after Williams introduced Pinball 2000 in a promotional video featuring clips of the moon landing and Martin Luther King Jr.?s ?I Have a Dream? speech, the company shuttered its pinball division. As the excellent documentary Tilt: The Battle to Save Pinball explains, Revenge From Mars, the initial Pinball 2000 title, sold well, but a Star Wars Episode I-themed follow-up got less traction with the Jar Jar-hating masses. Rather than prop up its declining pinball operation, Williams chose to focus on a more promising line of business: slot machines.

Thirteen years after this failed holographic experiment, pinball is just barely alive. A single company, Stern Pinball, holds a virtual monopoly on new equipment. What was once a quintessential American pastime has been exiled from its natural habitats?bars, diners, and even arcades.

For Jack Guarnieri, pinball?s decline brought on an existential crisis. Guarnieri has held most every job that has to do with flippers: repairman, game operator, reseller, inventor. With his livelihood and life?s passion in peril, he figured there was only one thing to do: Create history?s greatest pinball machine, one that would introduce a new generation to the pleasures of a well-struck ramp shot. Three-dimensional aliens couldn?t save pinball. Can a small-business man in New Jersey?

The pinball assembly line. The pinball assembly line.

Mariana Juliano for Slate.

In the Jersey Jack Pinball factory, history is covered in bubble wrap. A handful of simple, gorgeously illustrated 1960s-era games?Flipper Clown, King of Diamonds, Road Race?stand in a back corner, ready to ship to a nostalgia-minded connoisseur. The rest of this workshop in Lakewood, N.J., has been given over to a brand-new game with an old-timey theme, the machine Guarnieri believes will rocket pinball into its next golden age: the Wizard of Oz.

Each Oz pinball machine is the size of a casket built for a member of the Lollipop Guild. On this day in early fall, millions of dollars of parts?LED lights and emerald-green legs and a forest?s worth of anthropomorphic plastic trees?are sitting in cardboard boxes, waiting to be fished out by arcade-world craftsmen. On one assembly line, they?ll put together the machine?s heart, adding rails, rollover buttons, and magnets to the yellow-brick-road-laden playfield. They?ll also add the brains, stuffing the PC board, power supply, and other electronics inside the Wizard of Oz?s exterior shell.

In addition to the parts and labor, building a new pinball company takes courage, plus a light messianic streak. The 55-year-old Guarnieri, who?s got a lot of his native Brooklyn in his tireless voice, is the best kind of salesman. He talks fast but means everything he says, remembers every detail of anything that has to do with arcades, and doesn?t take himself too seriously?while still treating the quest for pinball supremacy as a noble, essential mission.

In Guarnieri?s view, this humming factory is proof of all you can accomplish when you love what you do. Bean-counter types have ?said some shitty things? about his arcade ambitions, he says, telling him he?s crazy to throw his money into the shrinking ball-and-flipper market. Perhaps it?s true that irrational exuberance can lead you to bankruptcy. But it?s also the only way to make something great from absolutely nothing, just as Guarnieri?s role models did. ?What overcomes doubt,? he says, ?is the resolve and the passion and determination of people like Steve Jobs and Sam Walton, whether it?s going over the hill in Normandy or whether it?s building a freaking pinball machine.?

Pinball first captivated the spare-change-having masses during the otherwise unamusing Great Depression, then surged again after World War II with the game-changing advent of the flipper. The pinball wizardry chronicled in the Who?s Tommy launched a silver-ball renaissance in 1969, and the development of bell-and-whistle-larded computerized machines in the 1970s kept those balls rolling. New York City also ended its three-decade-plus pinball ban in 1976?Mayor Fiorello La Guardia had believed it was ?a racket dominated by interests heavily tainted with criminality" that pilfered from the "pockets of schoolchildren in the form of nickels and dimes given them as lunch money??further clearing the way for the game?s cultural ascension.

Commuter ferry crash in New York injures 57, 1 critical

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A commuter ferry crashed into a pier in lower Manhattan early Wednesday, injuring 57 people, one critically, the New York City Police Department said.

Passengers lying on stretchers littered the pier near South Street Seaport, attended to by firefighters and rescue workers who rushed to the scene of the 8:43 a.m. (1343 GMT) hard landing.

"People were thrown into the air and onto the ground," passenger Elizabeth Banta told CNN. "There were definitely many people on the ground who were not moving."

Some of the injured were taken to the hospital, while others were treated at the scene, she said.

A police department spokesperson said one of the 57 people injured appeared to be in critical condition.

"The boat was backing up and hit something and that's when everything went crazy," said one witness, a construction worker who declined to be named, who was working nearby when the 400-passenger ferry slammed into the pier.

The National Transportation Safety Board tweeted that its investigators were gathering information about the cause of the crash.

Television images showed damage to the side of one end of the ferry, called Seastreak Wall Street, which departed from Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey.

In October 2003, a Staten Island ferry crashed into a maintenance pier, killing 11 people and injuring dozens more, and the same vessel, the Andrew J. Barberi, was involved in a second accident in May 2010 that injured around 40 people.

The ferry pilot in the 2003 crash and his supervisor were sentenced to more than a year in prison each for their roles in the accident. The pilot, Richard Smith, had passed out at the helm.

The ferry that crashed on Wednesday is run by Seastreak, a privately owned company that also holds the Interlake Steamship Company, Mormac Marine Group, Inc., and Moran Towing Co., the largest tug and barge operator on the East and Gulf Coasts, according to the company's website.

iTwin Connect turns a humble USB stick into your own VPN (video)

iTwin Connect gives you a hardwarebased VPN for your virtual files

Passing files over the internet using iTwin's 256-bit AES encryption's all well and good, but wouldn't it be nice if you could use that connection for other things? Luckily for you, that's just what the iTwin Connect was designed to do. In addition to the usual file-sharing jiggery-pokery, the new hardware can let you surf via your domestic internet connection, control devices on your home network and play with your desktop from afar. Even better, the company is throwing in US, Asia and Europe-based VPN servers of its own, so you can still catch that episode of Duck Dynasty on Hulu if your primary machine's turned off. Despite the raft of new features on offer, the company isn't charging a regular subscription, so all of that will set you back a rather meager $130.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama has returned to Washington after a winter vacation in Hawaii that was interrupted by the "fiscal cliff" crisis.

Obama arrived at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland on Sunday morning after an overnight flight.

The president's annual end-of-year visit to his native state was disrupted just after Christmas when he was forced to return to the capital to help broker a solution on a plan to avert a combination of tax increases and spending cuts that could have sent the economy back into recession.

He returned to Hawaii on New Year's Day.

Obama faces a full agenda in Washington, including possible appointments of a new defense secretary and CIA director and a meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai (HAH'-mihd KAHR'-zeye).

Family Tree: Sprechen Sie Deutsch? | Historic Indianapolis | All ...

Much has been written on this site and elsewhere about Indianapolis?s German influences. German immigrants played a big part in shaping the city from very early on. From its architecture to its laws and customs, Indianapolis is a product of its people, and many of its people were German.

Because of the saturation of German settlers in the city, its fair to say that many of its residents, at least those with a long history in the city, are of German descent. But how do you know for sure?

The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument ca. 1895, designed by Bruno Schmitz of Germany (image courtesy of Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives, University Library, IUPUI)

Many German settlers came to Indianapolis after the 1848 revolution in Germany. Often known as Forty-eighters, these men and their families came in pursuit of freedom and wealth. If your ancestors were among this group, then they will likely be listed in the 1850 and 1860 U.S. Censuses. In both documents, residents are asked to provide their country of origin. Once you?ve traced your ancestry back this far, discovering your heritage is as simple as reading the name of the country recorded there. Just keep in mind that names and boundaries have changed over time, so you may need to consult an 1850 map of Europe.

If your ancestors were not among the Forty-eighters, it doesn?t necessarily mean that they didn?t come from Germany. German immigrants settled in this area for many years before and many years after 1848. It?s also possible that they may have settled in another area, such as Pennsylvania, prior to moving to Indianapolis. If this is the case, then your trail will be a little longer and a bit more complicated.

Once you determine that your ancestors were from Germany, you can begin searching German-specific collections in Indianapolis. Perhaps your ancestor was a member of the Maennerchor.? ?Or maybe you have a Turner in your family tree.?These and many other collections?are available for your?perusal.??Even if you are unable to find specific mention of your ancestor in these collections,?they will add context to the city and time they lived in, and this will help you build their stories.

Clinton discharged from hospital, doctors expect full recovery

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was discharged from a New York hospital on Wednesday after being treated for a blood clot near her brain and her doctors expect her to make a full recovery, the State Department said.

Clinton, who has not been seen in public since December 7, was at New York-Presbyterian Hospital under treatment for a blood clot behind her right ear that stemmed from a concussion she suffered in mid-December, the department said on Sunday.

The concussion was the result of an earlier illness, described by the State Department as a stomach virus she had picked up during a trip to Europe that led to dehydration and a fainting spell after she returned to the United States.

"Secretary Clinton was discharged from the hospital this evening. Her medical team advised her that she is making good progress on all fronts, and they are confident she will make a full recovery," Philippe Reines, a deputy assistant secretary of state, said in a statement.

Reines said Clinton was "eager to get back to the office."

Earlier, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters at her daily briefing Clinton had been talking with her staff by telephone and receiving memos.

Clinton also spoke to two foreign officials - the U.N. envoy on Syria and the prime minister of Qatar - on Saturday, the day before the State Department disclosed the blood clot and her stay at the hospital.

In a statement released by the State Department on Monday, Clinton's doctors said she was being treated with blood thinners and would be released from the hospital once the correct dosage had been determined.

Andrew Sullivan?s Ad-Free Publishing Experiment Sees Six-Figure Revenue In First Six Hours

thedishWhen political blogger Andrew Sullivan announced this morning that he's leaving The Daily Beast and launching an independent company called Dish Publishing, the most provocative bit of news was his intended business model ? he doesn't plan to run any ads, and instead to support the company entirely through subscription revenue. "It's been a pretty amazing day," Sullivan told me. Six hours after he first made his announcement and put out his call for sign ups, he said, "We're well into the six figures." He described the system as a "leaky meter," where readers can hit the "read on" button a limited number of times per month before they have to pay ? it's leaky in that readers can follow links from other sites without adding to the meter. A subscription costs at least $19.99 per year, but readers can pay as much as they want, and Sullivan estimated that about a third of the initial subscribers are paying more than the minimum.
