The Future of Less: Why your next 'Passw0rd' might not be a password

It's been a rough year for passwords.

?

First, 6.5 million LinkedIn passwords were leaked online. Soon after, millions of passwords from eHarmony and Yahoo users were published by hackers. These events exposed untold numbers of accounts to criminals, as many consumers use the same passwords across multiple accounts.

The leaks also proved something experts had fretted about for a while: Passwords are very easy to guess. Analysts quickly compiled results from the list of passwords and found that really dumb choices abounded. The most common phrase in the LinkedIn passwords, for example, was "link." Not far behind was "1234."

?

Despite years of warnings, the truth is incontrovertible -- mortal users do a very poor job of defending their data with passwords. To add insult to injury, a recent analysis of debit card PINs shows that 1 in 10 users pick "1234." And the "safest" PIN code, 8068, is no longer safe because it was published in the analysis.

?

It's quite possible that 2012 will be a turning point in the history of passwords; or rather, it may be the point that passwords become history.

?

For years, you've been hearing about space-aged authentication systems like retina scans and computers that recognize your voice. And yet, for the overwhelming majority of computer users and home and at work, simple user/password combinations are all that stands between their data and the bad guys.

?

This old-fashioned system has obvious limitations, the most evident being user memories. Our brains are ill-suited to recall eight-digit combinations of letters, numbers and special characters that are recommended. Sticky notes with password lists taped to computer screens remain common.

?

Meanwhile, "Forgot your password?" is among the more popular links on websites, and among the more dangerous, as it often puts only your pet's name and your high school mascot -- easily determined from Facebook -- between your data and hackers.

?

There has to be a better way. And there is, if Carnegie-Mellon University and a small Canadian start-up firm are right. At the school's new "Biometrics Research and Identity Automation Lab," researchers are investigating whether the way people walk can be used as a simple yet secure way to affirm their identities.

?

?The continuing threats to military personnel and critical infrastructure and the growing national cybersecurity vulnerabilities demand a new breed of credentialing technology, and what our group has achieved certainly puts a whole new spin on things," said Todd Gray, president of Ottawa-based Autonomous ID, which is working with the university on the project. The system uses a "BioSole" inserted into shoes to assess a wearer?s gait, matching that distinctive pattern against an existing record to verify the person?s identity.

?

BioSoles are among dozens of new authentication systems vying for acceptance in a thriving industry that has gained momentum because of the recent troubles with passwords. Before we describe more of them, it's important to discuss the basics of authentication technologies and why new systems might succeed where others have failed.

?

Security professionals often talk about "two-factor" authentication as a way of double-checking to see if a person logging into a system should be authorized. Traditionally, those two factors include "something you have" and "something you know." For example, a debit card is "something you have,? and a PIN code is ?something you know.? For a criminal to hack your bank account, he or she must have both elements, which is a much harder challenge than simply stealing a password.

Biometric passwords expand the possibilities into the "something you are" category. A retina scan or fingerprint, for example, authenticates users based on something they are, and, in most cases, cannot change. Biometrics have a decided advantage over passwords because they don?t rely on users? ability to remember them -- you are who your retina says you are. There is a dramatic downside, however. Horror films have long exploited the plot line where a bad guy cuts out a target's eyeball and uses it to log into a computer or enter a secure facility.

?

The newest technologies retain the advantage of biometrics, but don't create the same level of physical risk. They involve "something you do," such as the way you walk, as being researched at Carnegie Mellon. Another similar tool involves quantifying the unique way users type, a technique that's been dubbed "keystroke analysis." These so-called "behavioral" authentication mechanisms give systems architects four distinct methods to choose from.

Marty Jost, who works in Symantec Corp.'s authentication group, says he thinks behavioral techniques offer the most promise for next-generation "passwords."

"Biometrics have been around a long time, but have historically tended to be unreliable. Just when you need it most, your fingerprints are dirty and they don't read right, for example. That's what's held it back," he said. "The key to success is providing a second factor without making it difficult to use. When you try to use an exotic method, it becomes a different problem, such as a customer service problem or a user satisfaction problem."

Symantec is concentrating on behavioral techniques that don't require dramatic changes by users. For a while, token-based authentication procedures were all the rage -- banks and corporations gave users small gadgets that provided temporary passwords to prove the person logging in satisfied the "something you have" requirement -- but users often misplaced them. So now, companies like Symantec are increasingly using cell phones as tokens. A simple text message or phone call sent to an employee?s phone serves as a second authenticating factor.

"Users are much less likely to lose their phones," Jost said.

Symantec also concentrates on back-end behavioral techniques, such as observing the kind of activities the user is attempting. A user who normally logs in from New York but suddenly appears to be logging in from Hong Kong is flagged for extra security challenges. Similarly, a user who usually transfers small dollar amounts from one account to another is flagged if her or she suddenly requests a $10,000 transfer.

"Behavioral data over time develop a profile," he said. ?We can analyze these patterns without having to involve the user.?

Jost is pessimistic about what he calls "exotic" login tools for mass audiences, because even a small failure rate can create a big problem for consumer brands.

"If you are a bank and you?ve done something exotic, if it?s not working for 1 percent of people, that's a lot of people,? he said. ?We try to strike that balance between strength and usability. ? We do things that make the activity safer for people without them necessary even knowing about it."
A user?s tolerance for taking extra security precautions depends on motivation. Some "exotic" methods are already in use today where circumstances encourage their use. In high-crime areas of Brazil, for example, "vein printing" machines that detect blood flow patterns in the palm of a user?s hand have been deployed. In the U.S., where ATM theft rates in the U.S. are not published by banks, the American Banking Association recently said that a successful ATM crime nets more than 10 times the cash as a traditional bank hold-up, and it hopes U.S. banks adopt one or more advanced ATM protection technologies.

Meanwhile, facial- and voice-recognition systems like Samsung?s ?Face Unlock,? and Apple?s Siri mean consumers are getting used to biometrics in their everyday mobile lives, and they might be more tolerant of similarly imperfect technologies at work and at home.

?I do think voice has a real shot now,? she said. ?Who wants to carry around a token that might weigh more than your iPhone??

The big hurdle with voice printing is ?enrollment,? or getting an initial clean version of a users? voice that?s used for comparison purposes later. Techniques for mass enrollment are still under development, but cell phone carriers are in a unique position to do this easily when they sell new phones, Litan noted.

?It would be easy for them,? she said. ?But there are plenty of other ways this could be accomplished.?

But despite the technological advances, the crime and all those leaked passwords, are passwords really on the way out? Jost isn't so sure.

"I certainly think the awareness of the problem is rapidly growing," he said. "It's quite easy to guess (passwords) ? and by using other types of systems you can overcome that problem. Is this a turning point or not? I'm not really sure. But I hope so. It is a problem that gets bigger and bigger."

Pediatricians should provide support for adoptive families

As more children are adopted each year, pediatricians must be knowledgeable about adoption issues and model positive language for adoptive families, according to a clinical report published online Sept. 24 in Pediatrics.

(HealthDay)? As more children are adopted each year, pediatricians must be knowledgeable about adoption issues and model positive language for adoptive families, according to a clinical report published online Sept. 24 in Pediatrics.

Veronnie F. Jones, M.D., Ph.D., and colleagues from the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Early Childhood and Council on Foster Care, Adoption, and Kinship Care, examined the role of the pediatrician in supporting adoptive families.

The researchers report that approximately 120,000 children, representing 2 percent of the U.S. population, are adopted every year. The role of pediatricians may start with reviewing preadoption health records to help families assess the health needs of children they plan to adopt. The pediatrician can help parents decide how and when to communicate about adoption with their children. They should introduce adoptive parents to available resources and provide support for parents during the child's developmental understanding of adoption. Pediatricians should be encouraged to model positive adoption language for adoptive families. This effective communication is key in promoting the long-term mental and physical health of adopted children and their families.

"As more children each year become part of permanent families through adoption, it is becoming increasingly important for pediatricians to be aware of and knowledgeable about adoption," the authors write. "Pediatricians play an important role in helping families deal with the differences, the losses, and the many other issues surrounding the adoption of a child."

STATEMENT BY KWAME YANKSON, DEPUTY SECRETARY ...

Salutations:

I am greatly honoured to be with you this morning as a representative of the Minister of Information and Communications, Hon. Alhaji Ibrahim Ben Kargbo to formally launch the independent Media Commission?s 2013-2015 Programme and Organizational Strategic Plan and GPS Maps of Sierra Leone. The efficiency of any organization or institution is determined by its Strategic plan which outlines its activities in the coming years and what the outputs will be. The Strategic Plan helps you to measure and evaluate your performance in concrete terms and determine where you succeeded and where the challenges are as the case may be.

I am particularly delighted to see the Independent Media Commission develop the Geographic Positioning System which is a sub-set of the Global Positioning System(GPS) which is not a novelty but not properly utilized as a major work tool and source of information in Sierra Leone. The Global Positioning System is a space-based satellite navigation system that provides location and time information in all weather, anywhere on or near earth, where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS Satellites. In this case, the Global Positioning System developed by the Independent Media Commission has to do with maps that provide information about the location of newspaper or media houses in Sierra Leone. These maps will be more useful to researchers and potential investors in the media industry in Sierra Leone. These maps will serve as a guide to their investment interests rather than bothering the Chairman of the Commission to provide details with regards to the number and location of media houses.

This act is an indication of my Ministry?s success in our attempt to inject a new life into the media regulator. Therefore, in commending the Commissioners and staff of the Independent Media Commission, I must say a big thank you to the United Nations Development Programme for supporting this laudable venture. We are and still remain to be partners in the development efforts of the Government.

The intention of the Ministry of Information and the Government at large is to undertake reforms in all sectors in the governance structure of the State and the Independent Media Commission is no exception. For democracy to thrive effectively, all institutions that have to do with freedom of expression and the dissemination of information must be allowed to function properly and their presence must be felt at all levels of governance. The creation of the Independent Media Commission by Government to allow the media to regulate itself was deliberate to avoid Government?s direct interference in the activities of the media. More particularly when it has to do with issues of redress from members of the public or even the media practitioners themselves.

Mr. Chairman, ladies and gentlemen it is no secret that Government has done remarkably well in allowing the media regulator to perform its functions independently without any overt or covert interference by the Executive arm of Government.

The Commission is dominated by veteran media practitioners that have the savvy to monitor and regulate the excesses of their former colleagues. That is why; I am not surprised by the introduction of this new drive, that is, a collation of the media houses in Sierra Leone in the form of a map. This speaks volumes of the type of leadership at the Independent Media Commission.

The Independent Media Commission like all institutions may have its own challenges, some of which these august gathering may be aware of, but the fact of the matter is that they have today manifested a clear indication of the path they want to take in the three years and how they want to achieve the targets set out in that Strategic Plan.

On this note, I want to thank the initiators of this golden idea and the sponsors as well for making this project a reality.

On behalf of the Minister of Information and Communications, Hon. Alhaji Ibrahim Ben Kargbo, I now formally launch the Programme and Organizational Strategic Plan of the IMC 2013-2015 and the GPS Maps of Sierra Leone. I thank you.

(AP) ? Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney says the attack on the American consulate in Libya was an act of terrorism and says the United States must use foreign aid to bring about lasting change in such places.

In a speech Tuesday, Romney said foreign aid cannot sustain a developing country on a permanent basis and that U.S. policies should promote work, not reliance. The former Massachusetts governor also says aid should give people dignity and change attitudes toward the West.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and President Barack Obama's top spokesman each have said the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi was a terrorist attack. Obama himself has not used that language.

Romney spoke in New York at an annual global development conference sponsored by former President Bill Clinton.

In just a few short hours, the Cincinnati Bengals will face off against the Washington Redskins in what should be a very interesting matchup.? That isn't good news for a Bengals defense that has been the polar opposite of outstanding.? However, the defense will get Carlos Dunlap back on the defensive line today.? He has proven that he can be the driving force on the line and will absolutely put pressure on RG3. Meanwhile, Andy Dalton's offense had a good showing against Cleveland last week. The Motivational Weightloss Program by Dr Lloyd Glauberman ...

It appears that on a monthly basis brings in a brand new sort of diet for weight loss. We see these food diets on tv, on publications and on line in a variety of guises a lot of them advocating healthy changes in lifestyle, healthy diet and healthy exercise. More frequently than not, most people can fail at these diets before Motivational Weightloss Program has their life. No, this really is not another diet message providing you with the ways and methods to acquire a lean and mean human body through a group of nutritional recommendations and exercise program. We have way too many of those products and services in the market that may or may not be effective. In fact, you can decide the weight loss diet and exercise plan that you feel will continue to work best for your case, all while also applying the principles found in Dr. Glauberman?s work. So, the question remains: What?s the The Motivational Weightloss Program? To place it just, this is a program touching on the numerous psychological aspects of weight reduction. The program was developed by noted psychologist and therapist, Lloyd Glauberman. You need not as there are number subliminal messages found in any part of the program.Instead worry, Dr. Glauberman utilizes his revolutionary approach called Hypno Peripheral Processing (HPP) to bring about sustained improvements in to how the crowd thinks about the topic of fat loss. You will find number diet and exercise plans in the The Motivational Weightloss Program since Dr. Glauberman wants to break up the intellectual barriers that prevent everyone from basically following the weight loss plans suggested by health and exercise experts.Think of the Dr. Lloyd Glauberman?s plan being an essential adjunct therapy to your weight loss treatment. While your body undergoes the required changes in form, size and thickness via a healthy diet and exercise program, your brain also undergoes a series of welcome changes where you can stay glued to your healthy lifestyle. If you?ve ever gone on yo-yo diets, backslid into overeating and reverted to being fully a passive, it could have been mostly because the mind was unprepared for these physical changes. This is where The Motivational Weightloss Program comes in. Gradually, you?ll condition your mind to simply accept the real changes being produced until such time that whatever life style changes are needed in your weightloss program becomes second nature for you. As an example, if the lifestyle changes say that you?ve to eat less, listening to the CD will condition your mind to really eat less.Indeed, therefore many individuals fail inside their fat loss efforts because of their exclusive focus on what the human body desires and then pandering to it. The mind is then woefully and wrongfully overlooked, that ought to perhaps not be as fat loss is indeed frequently an of mind over body. Therefore, if your weight loss programs aren?t going needlessly to say, we recommend currently hearing the The Motivational Weightloss Program.

Mexico stays on gun probe despite US report

(AP) ? Mexican prosecutors say they will continue investigating the botched-gun smuggling probe known as Operation Fast and Furious even after a U.S. Justice Department internal watchdog report concluded that more than a dozen officials should be disciplined.

In a Friday statement, the Mexican Attorney General's Office says it's looking at the document released this week to see what it could add to its own probe.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has been accused of knowing about the bungled operation, but the report cleared him and faulted mid-level and senior officials for not briefing him.

Fast and Furious allowed low-level "straw" buyers in gun-trafficking networks to leave with loads to track the guns to major traffickers. But some guns wound up at crime scenes in Mexico and the U.S.

PFT: Jennings' recovery takes step back

Washington Redskins v St Louis RamsGetty Images

After Rams running back Steven Jackson left Sunday?s win over the Redskins in the second quarter, it widely was believed that he?d been benched for spiking the football in frustration and drawing a 15-yard penalty.

After the game, coach Jeff Fisher said that Jackson has an injured groin, but that he could have re-entered the game.

Regardless of whether Jackson could have returned to the game, he has now missed two days of practice.

?He did not practice today and we?ll have him on the injury report for you on Friday,? Fisher told the media on Thursday.

Fisher added that he doesn?t have a policy that requires a player to practice in order to play.? Jackson said he has played with worse injuries.

?I?m not 100 percent, but day-to-day,? Jackson said. ?The injury is not as significant as we once thought it was and we?re just going to go from there. I still have the three days before the game, I believe. Each and every day buys me time.?

It?d be interesting to know when the Rams specifically thought the injury was significant.? The fact that the Rams gave no in-game injury update on Jackson could pique the league?s interest in that regard, too.

Nine years ago, former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan was fined for reporting during a game that quarterback Jake Plummer had left with a concussion when, in reality, Plummer had a separated shoulder.? Shanahan said at the time that he lied in order to conceal the true nature of the injury from the Chargers, in the event the team?s other quarterback (Steve Beuerlein) had gotten injured, forcing Plummer back into the game.? (And, yes, in 2003 a guy could re-enter a game with a concussion.)

?To share with somebody that Jake has a separated shoulder and could not throw and our quarterback goes down, we have a good chance to lose the football game,? Shanahan said at the time.

In this case, with Shanahan on the other sideline, Fisher likely didn?t want the Redskins to think that Jackson was injured in any way, in the event that he had to re-enter the game.? And despite the friendship between Shanahan and Fisher, Shanahan should be asking 345 Park Avenue whether Fisher will be making the same involuntary contribution to the NFL?s charities that Shanahan once did.

James Cameron is finally getting over 'Titanic'

Fifteen years after ?Titanic,? James Cameron says he?s finally ready to move on. He never really had been that much of a Titanic enthusiast; he said he was just looking for a new project after such films as ?Terminator? and ?Aliens,? when he ran across a copy of ?A Night to Remember,? the 1958 film about the sinking of the great ship.

The rest, as they say, is history ? plus a couple of star-crossed lovers, 11 Academy Awards and worldwide gross earnings of something more than $2 billion. ?I think I?m in the process of letting go of it now, but it?s been a 17-year journey that started with great interest and became an obsession,? said Cameron when we sat down with him for an ABC News/Yahoo! News Newsmakers interview.

?And the fascination, I think, is not just the human story, but there?s also the forensic analysis of the wreck. What can we learn from that twisted steel at the bottom of the ocean that ? we can work backwards, like an airplane crash, and figure out, can we find the iceberg damage? What happened when it broke up? What happened when it sank to the bottom, and so on??

Cameron has, of course, done other things since ?Titanic? premiered in 1997 (you may have seen a little project of his called ?Avatar? ? the only other film in history ever to gross more than $2 billion). But the Titanic?s sinking kept pulling him back in.

There was ?Titanic,? the documentary to mark the centennial of the ship?s sinking. There was ?Titanic,? the re-release in 3-D. There?s now been ?Titanic,? the 3-D release on Blu-ray disc. And there?s ? well, there won?t be ?Titanic 2,? despite some elaborate spoofs you can find online.

Cameron says he?s satisfied he knows what there is to know about the 1912 tragedy. He?s been down to the wreck himself 33 times; he?s done computer simulations of how it came apart as it went to the bottom on that cold April night in 1912.

?And I think we?re able to tell that story quite clearly now, but it?s taken 15 years of investigation to do it,? he said.

He talked about the link he sees between filmmaking and exploration. Having succeeded at the former, he?s done his share of the latter. In April he rode a submersible to the bottom of the Challenger Deep in the South Pacific, the deepest spot in the world?s oceans.

It is an explorer?s obligation, he said, to bring back experiences for the rest of us to share. ?Maybe it?s a filmmaker?s impulse,? he said. ?To me, to go and explore without taking high-quality imagery ? it?s a tree falling in the forest. The job of the explorer, partially, is to be a storyteller, to bring the story back. And what better way to do it than in 3-D HD, which is why, when I went to the bottom of the Challenger Deep, I made sure we had 3-D cameras on the sub.?

He described himself as a one-time aspiring scientist, though his math grades weren?t good enough. He?s contented himself with science fiction. His childhood heroes included deep-sea explorers and astronauts. He said, when asked, that he?d love to go to Mars, though with five children to think about, he may leave it to others.

?I think you have to send people,? he said, though he applauds the imagery sent from the Martian surface by NASA?s Curiosity rover. ?The robots are good, they bring back good data, good science, but they don?t captivate the public imagination the same way as a human being going out there at the vanguard of human experience.?

Swim coach banned for life in sex abuse case

Rick Curl was one of the nation's most prominent swimming coaches. He put his stamp on an Olympic champion. He built a highly respected club that trained thousands of youngsters.

All along, he was hiding a dark secret.

It caught up with him Wednesday.

Curl was banned for life by USA Swimming over allegations of an intimate relationship with a teenage swimmer in the 1980s, another ugly chapter in a sexual abuse scandal that has rocked one of America's most successful Olympic sports.

"He cast a spell over me," said Kelley Davies Currin, who claims the relationship started when she was 13 and Curl was 33. "I don't know why. Looking back, it doesn't make sense. He controlled everything. He controlled what I ate, when I slept, who I could hang out with."

The founder of a well-known club in the Washington, D.C., area and coach for 1996 and 2000 Olympic gold medalist Tom Dolan, Curl was scheduled to appear Wednesday before the National Board of Review. But he informed the governing body he was waiving his right to challenge the case at a hearing.

Curl voluntarily gave up his membership and was added to USA Swimming's list of banned individuals, which is published on the organization Web site. He became the 67th name on the list.

Currin said she was pleased with the banishment of someone who caused her so much misery, but hopes it is only the beginning of truly meaningful change throughout the sport.

"Obviously I feel really good about it," she told The Associated Press in an interview. "But, in a way, I feel like this should have been done so long ago. This is really just the first step in the process. Unfortunately, I don't think things are going to get better. I think more discoveries are going be made. This is just the first layer of the onion."

Currin received a $150,000 settlement from Curl not to go to law enforcement with details of the illicit four-year relationship, a decision she still regrets.

"We had horrible counsel. We were given terrible legal advice," she said. "I absolutely, positively wish I could have a redo. I think there needs to be a law that for a child who's abused, there's no option. It's a criminal case. It's got to be reported. To settle out of court should never be an option."

After the settlement, Currin said she dealt with depression and suffered from an eating disorder. She has since married and gotten a job as a teacher, allowing some degree of normalcy. Still, she decided to come forward after the sport was rocked by a sexual abuse scandal that first came to light two years ago.

"There were just some really dark days," Currin said. "Abuse is horrific at any age but when it happens in the preteen years, the early teen years, those are the hardest years anyway for an adolescent. ... It was just so confusing for me. I'll live with the scars of that forever."

Dozens of coaches have been involved in improper relationships with underage swimmers, prompting USA Swimming to launch a new safe sport program that includes mandatory training and enhanced criminal background checks for all non-athlete members. Critics say the sport still promotes a culture of secrecy and has demanded that the top leadership be replaced, including executive director Chuck Wielgus.

Curl's attorney, Thomas Kelly, did not immediately respond to voice mails and an email seeking comment.

The coach stepped down as CEO of Curl-Burke Swim Club in July and is no longer associated with the team. The club issued a statement Tuesday saying it has changed its name to Nation's Capital Swim Club, with 15 sites around the Washington area serving more than 2,000 athletes.

The club's most notable swimmer is 15-year-old Katie Ledecky, who won a gold medal in the 800-meter freestyle at the London Olympics.

"The last couple of months have been a challenging time for our club, coaches, swimmers and facility partners," said Tom Ugast, the new CEO. "Our new name and ownership build on the many changes we've already made that reflect our uncompromising commitment to the safety of our swimmers, while preserving the talents and strengths that have made our club one of the country's most successful for years."

Currin was notified of the decision to ban her former coach in a letter from Susan Woessner, director of safe sport for USA Swimming.

"I want to thank you for your courage in coming forward and speaking out," Woessner wrote. "Your willingness to share your story is now holding Rick accountable after all these years. Thank you, Kelley. I have endless gratitude."

USA Swimming said it would have no additional comment.

Currin's attorney, Robert Allard, said she is working with investigators to pursue criminal charges against Curl, pointing out there is no statute of limitations on federal law under the Mann Act and adding that some state laws in Maryland and Virginia could also apply to the case.

Allard called Curl "the proverbial Jerry Sandusky within this organization," referring to the former Penn State football coach awaiting a likely life sentence for sexually abusing underage boys.

"We're hoping the conclusion of this is exactly the same one they had at Penn State ? the pedophile goes to jail, and those who were aware of it and did nothing are held criminally responsible as well," the attorney said.

As part of a separate lawsuit filed Monday, Allard claims former national team coach Mark Schubert knew of the case for years and tried, without success, to get USA Swimming to investigate.

"Similar to Penn State immediately moving to rid itself of those who knew and did nothing, we are not going to stop until the same is done at USA Swimming, starting with Mr. Wielgus," the attorney said. He also called for the firing of technical vice president David Berkoff, saying he "has admitted to knowing all about Mr. Curl going back to the early 1990s and failed to take effective action to protect young swimmers."

Despite being under investigation since April 2011, Curl was allowed to attend the U.S. Olympic trials this summer with a coaching credential.

"To be honest, I was not surprised people knew about it and did nothing," Currin said. "But when I learned for sure there was actual knowledge, it makes me want to throw up."

Is It Still Called A Vacation if the Kids Are With You? | Toddler Times

cover 300x217 With or Without You: 5 Pros and 5 Cons of Taking Little Kids on Vacation

Traveling with kids: Fun or torture?

Is a vacation really a vacation if the kids are with you?

You might be getting away, but is that a bad thing if it means schedules are turned upside down and unfamiliar sights, smells, tastes and sounds result in all-too-familiar tantrums?

Or do the benefits of adventure, no distractions and unparalleled quality family time win out in the end?

Here are 5 pros and 5 cons of taking the kids with you on vacation:

  • thumbs istock 000014209545xsmall With or Without You: 5 Pros and 5 Cons of Taking Little Kids on Vacation

Con #1: Sleep schedules get turned upside down

Even if you?re a parent who is not guilty of overscheduling the family when you go on vacation, no one ever seems to get enough rest anyway. Whether you?ve traveled to a different time zone or need to be somewhere early in the morning or later in the evening for a tour or reservation, or the excitement of what lies ahead means the children are simply too excited to fall asleep or sleep in, routines from home go by the wayside, which usually means the number of hours of sleep banked each night also falls down by a few precious and critical hours.

    /toddler-times/2012/09/18/with-or-without-you-5-pros-and-5-cons-of-taking-little-kids-on-vacation/#con-1-sleep-schedules-get-turned-upside-down

  • thumbs istock 000021371334xsmall With or Without You: 5 Pros and 5 Cons of Taking Little Kids on Vacation

Con #2: New food and experiences can mean new kinds of meltdowns

Thought it was hard to try and get your toddler to try new foods at home? You know, that place where you stock the cupboards and refrigerator and always have back-ups on hand in the event of a total food emergency meltdown?
Unless you?re staying somewhere with a kitchen and a well-stocked grocery store nearby, you?ll probably spend the bulk of your meals on vacation in restaurants, which means your little ones will be expected to eat what?s put before them and like it and behave when they don?t. Three times a day. Plus snacks.
    Good luck with that.

    /toddler-times/2012/09/18/with-or-without-you-5-pros-and-5-cons-of-taking-little-kids-on-vacation/#con-2-new-food-and-experiences-can-mean-new-kinds-of-meltdowns

Con #3: Unfamiliarity can breed uncertainty and unease

Lots of little kids are totally adventurous. But even the best of ?em get a little rattled when they?re hit with lots of change all at once. Between airports, planes, taxis, hotels, museums, zoos, beaches and sightseeing, it?s a lot of new and potentially overwhelming stuff.
Chances are you don?t need to be told how your kids can react when they get overwhelmed.

    /toddler-times/2012/09/18/with-or-without-you-5-pros-and-5-cons-of-taking-little-kids-on-vacation/#con-3-unfamiliarity-can-breed-uncertainty-and-unease

  • thumbs istock 000011853101xsmall With or Without You: 5 Pros and 5 Cons of Taking Little Kids on Vacation

Con #4: Traveling can suck the life out of you

If you thought it was hard to be the Mom-In-Chief of your household, try adding Tour Guide to your job description. Not only do little kids want to be entertained constantly, they kind of need to be. Which means you have to figure out activities to occupy your days and nights, as well as the location of all nearby restrooms and soft-serve ice cream shops.
Oh, and when your kids inevitably get diarrhea because of something they ate (one too many soft-serve ice cream cones, perhaps?) or drank, you?ll also need to locate a pediatrician/pharmacy/plunger.

    /toddler-times/2012/09/18/with-or-without-you-5-pros-and-5-cons-of-taking-little-kids-on-vacation/#con-4-traveling-can-suck-the-life-out-of-you

  • thumbs istock 000015254685xsmall With or Without You: 5 Pros and 5 Cons of Taking Little Kids on Vacation

Con #5: You need a vacation from your vacation

Even if you manage not to get woken up 19 times a night while sharing a hotel room with your kids, they end up thriving on all of the new sights, smells and tastes they experience, and don?t collapse into a heap of tantrums roughly every two hours, you are probably ready to sleep for the next four weeks following a vacation with your children.
It?s a rare toddler who will let you nap and read on the beach for a few hours of downtime each day. It?s a common toddler, however, who acts like a shark that needs to move forward and constantly, never stopping. And that means a vacation is like a sprint and marathon wrapped into one.
Oh, and then there?s all that laundry once you get back home.

    /toddler-times/2012/09/18/with-or-without-you-5-pros-and-5-cons-of-taking-little-kids-on-vacation/#con-5-you-need-a-vacation-from-your-vacation

  • thumbs istock 000020171592xsmall With or Without You: 5 Pros and 5 Cons of Taking Little Kids on Vacation

Pro #1: Your kids will learn to experience the joys of travel from a young age

Some great travelers are born, but others are made. If you start traveling with your children when they?re very little, enduring long plane rides becomes less of a hassle and more of a passageway to something new and potentially thrilling.
Get them to enjoy travel early in life and it?s as if you?ve given them a passport to keep exploring for the rest of their lives.

    /toddler-times/2012/09/18/with-or-without-you-5-pros-and-5-cons-of-taking-little-kids-on-vacation/#pro-1-your-kids-will-learn-to-experience-the-joys-of-travel-from-a-young-age

  • thumbs istock 000009167059xsmall With or Without You: 5 Pros and 5 Cons of Taking Little Kids on Vacation

Pro #2: Carefree family time is spent without any work distractions

When was the last time you sat down to a family meal without the home phone ringing, iPhone vibrating or doorbell ringing? OK, when was the last time you had a few consecutive meals without any of that happening?
It?s the miracle of getting away from it all: You can really get away from it all. And no matter where you go, that?s a vacation in and of itself.

    /toddler-times/2012/09/18/with-or-without-you-5-pros-and-5-cons-of-taking-little-kids-on-vacation/#pro-2-carefree-family-time-is-spent-without-any-work-distractions

  • thumbs istock 000015942270xsmall With or Without You: 5 Pros and 5 Cons of Taking Little Kids on Vacation

Pro #3: Kids get to test out their more adventurous side

Whether you can manage to get your children to try Blue Point oysters in Great South Bay or Rocky Mountain oysters in Colorado, if they go parasailing in Mexico or rock climbing in the Gunks, they might relish the opportunity to show you what they?re made of, and you?ll relish witnessing how well they do outside of their comfort zone.

    /toddler-times/2012/09/18/with-or-without-you-5-pros-and-5-cons-of-taking-little-kids-on-vacation/#pro-3-kids-get-to-test-out-their-more-adventurous-side

  • thumbs istock 000017360153xsmall With or Without You: 5 Pros and 5 Cons of Taking Little Kids on Vacation

Pro #4: Tremendous family memories are being created

That time they swam with dolphins. That time you bought that colorful blanket from a beach vendor. That time you got stuck in a chair lift. That time there was a spider in the bed.
OK, maybe that last one was a Brady Bunch vacation memory. But the point is that the shared experiences away from home have a way of seeping into everyone?s consciousness and popping up in a dream or story even long after the trip has ended and etching a permanent place in the Fond Recollections section of the brain.
